If you’re interested in Indian fashion, you should learn a thing or two regarding Indian jewelry. And for that, you’ve come to the right post. In here, I’m going to describe 4 types of Indian jewelry, and their meaning.

Aranjanam

aranjanamThis type of jewelry is a precious metal (silver, gold or platinum) chain which is worn under the clothin, around the midriff area. It’s worn usually by women, most children and by some men as well.

The Aranjanam is part of the ceremony in which the baby receives a name. An Aranjanam is given to each child in the 28th day from their birth.

Kundan

kundanKundan or Kundan keshri is a sort of traditional gemstone-based jewelry. It’s the oldest type of jewelry worn in India. Kundan jewelry usually involves carefully cut and shaped gems, placed in pure gold settings. The creation process of a Kundan necklace begins with the skeletal framework named “Ghaat”. Once the Ghaat is made, follows the “Paadh” process.

During the Paadh phase, wax is poured onto the framework and shaped to fit the design. Next is the “Khudai” process, where the gems (cut or uncut) are fit into their slots. “Meenakari” is the enameling process which comes to add definition to the design. Next, the “Pakai” phase solding of the gold foils that hold the gems, to the framework. The final process is the “Cillai” and during this phase the gems are polished.

Jadau

jadauJadau is the name for Indian jewelry of high-end craftsmanship and value, Jadau craftsmanship known to be present beginning with the Mughal Era. Since it’s considered traditional Indian craftsmanship, Jadau jewelry is worn in ceremonies like weedings, festivals etc.

The creation of a piece of Jadau jewelry requires a group of craftsmen, involved together in the project, each one carrying out one particular task in the creation of the jewelry. Nowadays, Jadau doesn’t involve just jewelry but also jewelry boxes and other artistic creations.
